Breakthrough Urban Ministries
Located in the East Garfield Park neighborhood just east of the Garfield Park Conservatory, the facility provides accommodations for up to 35 homeless men over the age of 22. In addition to offering temporary shelter, the building also serves as the home for Breakthrough's men's services and job training programs.
The new facility is actually a renovation of two buildings on the site that were previously used by a lighting fixture manufacturer. At least 50 percent of the existing structures are being completely rebuilt to form a single, two-story shelter that will provide 21,000 square feet.
Breakthrough Urban Ministries was founded in 1992 by Arloa Sutter, Executive Director and members of the First Evangelical Free Church as a response to homelessness in the Edgewater and Uptown neighborhood of Chicago. The organization runs programs designed to help abused women and families, underprivileged children, homeless and unemployed men and other needy individuals.
Through their BEST (Breakthrough Employment Services & Training) program, Breakthrough works with residents to secure permanent, unsubsidized employment so they can gain stability and independence, support their families, become positive role models and citizens of their community; and break the cycle of poverty.
