Dedicated January, 2008.
For over 30 years, Family Shelter Service has helped thousands of victims of domestic violence and their children heal and find pathways to safety. In
DuPage County, domestic violence is the second most frequently reported crime. The new center for victims of domestic violence and their children - located in Downers Grove, Illinois - is approximately 15,000 square feet and accommodates both a shelter and a community counseling facility. The shelter provides space for 18 residents with sufficient flexibility to house one family per room. The community-based counseling center will provide a range of supportive programs, including individual, family, and group counseling. It is anticipated that approximately 250 adults and 120 children will be served each year at this new facility.

Family Shelter Services Yearly Results

  • 300 women and children received counseling, support and advocacy services enabling them to achieve safety for themselves and their children
  • 900 women and children participated a range of services that supported efforts to heal and move forward with their lives
  • 10,000 individuals received immediate attention through Family Shelter’s 24-hour hotline, a 33% increase over last year
  • 6,700 incidents of domestic violence were reported by DuPage police jurisdictions for follow-up
  • 2,141 Orders of Protection were processed with the assistance of Family Shelter’s Court Advocacy Program.

The Need:

Victims of domestic violence in DuPage County comprise an at-risk population that is often under-served and unable to access resources that could be of help to them. This is particularly true for undocumented and non-English speaking victims of domestic violence.  Seventy-five percent of Family Shelter Services’ clients meet HUD guidelines for low and/or very low income, reflecting the impact of domestic violence on economic viability. DuPage County crime data indicates domestic violence is the second most prevalent offense in the County, which is demonstrated by over 10,000 calls annually to Family Shelter’s crisis hotline and nearly 7,500 police reported incidents of domestic violence.
