About HomeAid Chicago

Who is HomeAid Chicago?

HomeAid Chicago is a nonprofit organization working in partnership with the Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago. HomeAid Chicago is a local chapter of HomeAid, Inc.

Our mission is to build dignified housing where homeless families and individuals can rebuild their lives. To achieve this goal, we work to encourage and mobilize the members of the local building industry to donate to established successful care providers in the Chicagoland community.

 Why Help HomeAid Chicago

On any given night, more than a million Americans are homeless. Poverty, lack of affordable housing, eroding job opportunities, mental illness, domestic violence, chemical dependency, desertion or death of a parent or spouse and catastrophic illness all are causes of homelessness. "More than 57,000 Illinois children were homeless in 2010, up from 30,636 in 2006, according to a December report from The National Center for Family Homelessness. Nationally, 1.6 million U.S. children lived in homeless shelters, motels, with relatives or other families or living on the street in 2010 - a 38 percent increase since 2007, according to the center." (Chicago Sun-Times, January 8, 2012)

How does HomeAid Chicago work?

HomeAid Chicago uses a proven model, an easy three step process:

  1. Select a worthy care provider that is in need of a new facility or renovation of an existing structure in order to serve a larger number of temporarily homeless individuals or families.
  2. Recruit a volunteer “builder captain” who coordinates the construction and assists in securing trade partners to provide in-kind labor, materials or services.
  3. Ensure that this team works together to complete the project
